Daughter: It’s not FAIR!!!!
Me: What’s not fair?
Daughter: I want star pockets too! 😦
Little Miss 6 might have a pang of jealousy that her brother FINALLY has a new mama made outfit and she does not! And I guess I owe her a dress with star pockets!
Today I’m sharing my project from the Boys in Summer Blog Tour, a Sewing Blue blog tour hosted by Made for Little Gents.

For the last two years or so, my 4 year old son has been obsessed with cats. He will happily spend hours just being a cat. He will drive his swim instructors crazy by being a cat for the majority of his lesson. The kid adores cats. Boys clothes do not come with cats on them. Fabric rarely comes with boy friendly cats on them. So, during one of the Simply by Ti’s weekly Facebook video classes, when I saw she had made her son an outfit with blue cat fabric on it, I knew I just had to have it.
I found this cat fabric at Peekaboo Fabric Shop*. It’s a European cotton lycra by Stof and unfortunately is no longer available there, but they do have a ton of other really cool prints by Stof. I used faux leather from Simply By Ti for the grommet accents, and stripes from Purple Seamstress.
I decided to use my ever-faithful Halla Patterns Kids Stardust Shirt* for the hoodie. I modified it by color blocking the front and back. I tried out the star pockets for the first time and love them!
For the pants, I used the Halla Kids Lounge Pants*. I should have gone with the size 2/3 because he is so skinny, but I thought *MAYBE* he has grown out a little since I last measured… So, I’ll probably undo the waistband on these and stick some elastic inside! I decided to use the star pocket in these too. I’m not sure how *functional* this pocket will be, but they still look cute! For the fabric, I decided to use Simply By Ti stretch French Terry in black. I think I had originally bought this for me, but I can always get more! It’s really cozy and I think it will hold up better on my son than cotton Lycra!

This is so cute, and all the love for the cats! You are right, boy clothes mostly gears towards dogs and girl clothes goes towards cats. Glad you could find a print for him!

It’s so funny how animals get gendered like this! I’m starting to find some other boy friendly cat prints though I feel like generally there are more girl prints of everything!

Haha, the jealousy conversation made me laugh! My daughter sounded just like that when she was younger! The cat outfit is super cute on your son and he’s a cutie!

Thanks! I’m going to have to work out how to use the cats for her. Though my 2 year old is having conniptions about it now too so stay tuned! 😂😂

What a great post and the star pocket is indeed an awesome detail. Your topstitching is perfect and gives the outfit a professional look. Chapeau.
