Sometimes it can be hard to find awesome boy friendly fabric, so I was excited to see this new monster car design from MK*Designs! Of course, when it arrived my daughters insisted it was for them and were pretty bitter when I declared it was for their brother. Monster cars for everyone!
Each of the graphics on the panels measure about 8″ square. They also have a city skyline in the background which provides great texture in this print. This background is also replicated in the yardage.
In my sweater I used the top part of the panel on the front and the lower portion of the panel is on the back bodice. Unfortunately I didn’t get a decent photo of the back – hopefully tomorrow I can update this post with one!
The fabric is beautiful to touch – so soft and smooth! It’s 220gsm and the yardage is 60-66″ wide! Panels come in a set of three and each one measures approximately 21″X28″.
There are so many vibrant colors in this design, it will definitely coordinate with many different solids! I used lime green from Simply By Ti, but you could definitely use a hot pink, orange, yellow, aqua, kelly green, or navy. (See what else I’ve made with Simply By Ti’s lime green cotton lycra!)
Since winter is coming, I decided to line the entire thing with Polartec (soft shell)! It’s super duper warm – perhaps a little *too* warm!! Hopefully he appreciates it when winter really rolls around! I used a solid black Polartec on the inside, and a textured Polartec for the accents on the outside (and as the lining to the hat).
About the Pattern
I decided to use the BeeKiddie Boy’s BeeStyle for the sweater, sizing up to accommodate the fleece. I misread the instructions and failed to shorten the arm length, so his arms are a bit too long! I thought it would be fun to hack the sleeve to add the panel of fleece into the elbow – if you’re going to do that too, I suggest measuring your child’s arm and working out exactly where their elbow hits before cutting into your fabric. I winged it, but could definitely have done with moving the fleece up about an inch (and shortening the sleeve at bottom).
Since I opted for the collar rather than the hood, I used the MW Patterns Criss Cross Beanie pattern* to make this fun hat! This is such a great design – it really gives a wow factor to an outfit, and it’s pretty easy to make! (I’ve written more about the hat over here).
