Sew Straight & Gather Avenue Dress with Beanpop!

I am so excited about this dress! I’m a “strike-off seamstress” for Beanpop Fabrics and when they requested this gorgeous striped floral fabric be sewn up, I just KNEW it would be a perfect combo with the Sew Straight & Gather Avenue Dress that I tested earlier in the year. (In fact, there are so many things I want to make with this fabric – it is just so stunning!).

About the Fabric

This fabric (called “Rosa Fiora”) is high quality 230gsm Cotton Lycra (95/5), CPSIA/CPSC compliant, and 58-60″ wide. It has such a luxurious feel to it! (Aside: we have some boys in our church who have sensory issues and their mom told me how much they love to touch my daughter’s handmade clothes because they are so soft! Of course, she has also told them they can’t do that!!).

Beanpop Fabrics currently have this fabric available for preorder, with the round closing on October 20th! It’s a fast turnaround this time because Chinese New Year is on the horizon! (Manufacturing shuts down for many weeks during CNY!).

To order this fabric (which is also available in French Terry, Bamboo Lycra, Swim, and Stretch Woven), just join the Beanpop Fabrics Facebook group and head over to their website from there.

The navy Cotton Lycra is from NR Fabrics* and isn’t a perfect match, but decently close. Other colors that I think would work perfectly with this design include denim, coral, pink, and aqua.

About the Pattern

As to the dress, I learned a couple of things after making my first one! Firstly, correct chest size is SUPER important! To ensure the back straps lay perfectly flat, the chest needs to be tight. My daughter is skinny and tall, so I used the 3T chest size, 4T waist, 5 hip and 6 for height! The only adjustment I might make next time is to lengthen the armscye slightly (on the dress and the sleeve pieces) as it’s a little tight in the arm.

The Sew Straight & Gather Avenue Top & Dress is available in various lengths (top, knee, calf, maxi). There are also multiple sleeve lengths and an option for a back vent or side vent(s). The back neckline also has a couple of options – with or without the bands. It ranges from size 2T – 14.

I was able to squeeze out the Avenue Dress in calf length from just a fat half of Cotton Lycra plus a little bit of solid navy blue for the arms, bands, and facings. (A fat half is half the width of fabric x 1 yard. The preorder fabric is sold by the yard.).

I just love this dress! It’s so eye catching and teamed with this fabric, sure to be a show stopper!
