Oh, Boo! Designs Skater Dress (affiliate link), you are my favorite for a quick, satisfying sew! And how fun is this version?! MK*Designs asked me to sew up a strike-off of their gorgeous “Evil Melted Crayon” cotton lycra, and I thought a hacked version of the Boo! Skater would be a perfect match for it! It is so twirly and colorful – I just love it! (Scroll down for info on how I did this hack!)
About the hack:
For this one, I wanted to break up the vibrancy of the skirt and sharpness of the stripes, with a solid waistband. To do it, I cut 2″ off the front and back bodice, and added seam allowance to the bodice parts AND to the top of the waistband piece.
I then cut two waistband pieces using the pattern piece (1 front, 1 back), and I cut another two that were twice the height.
I cut 4 pieces of clear elastic the same height as the original waistband piece, then used these pieces to gather the sides of the tall pieces. I then basted the two fronts together and the two backs.
Next, I attached the bands to the bodice pieces and proceeded as normal to complete the dress.
About the fabric:
The melted crayon fabric is a beautiful custom cotton Lycra knit from MK*Designs. The quality is great – it’s soft and sturdy – comparable to Art Gallery and Euro knits. This particular one is limited edition and available at 4pm CST, Sunday July 16, 2017! Join their Facebook group for your chance to score some of this gorgeous fabric!
MK*Designs sent me 1 yard of this fabric complimentary for the purpose of sewing up and promoting. With that yard, I was able to make quite a few garments!! Next up, I’ll be sharing a pair of pants and a hoodie that I made for my son (YES, this print is great for boys too!), and a tank top I made for me!
(My kids aren’t scared of the camera, haha -I swear, she comes up with her own moves 😉 )
(And she refuses to wear her shoes properly :-P).
