Oliver + S Sunny Day Shorts

(Originally published on BurdaStyle May 31, 2014)

I made these Oliver + S Sunny Day Shorts (a free pattern!) for my toddler this weekend. I customized the original pattern by adding pockets (from another Oliver+S pattern) and piping. I had never worked with piping before. The biggest challenge was hemming with the piping in place. I think I need to research better methods for that so as to avoid bulky seams.

The fabric has been in my stash for quite a few years now. I had big plans to make shorts for myself with it, but that never transpired. Maybe I still will make some! The only problem with the fabric is that I found it at this “Aladdin’s Cave” in Chinatown, NYC (that has since closed down), and even though I washed it before sewing, it has a funky smell whenever I iron it, and also left my hands feeling kinda grimy. I think I’ll try washing it in something more heavy duty next time. I also realized afterwards that although I think orange is awesome, she doesn’t actually have a whole lot of orange clothing in her wardrobe, so it was hard to find a top that would go with it. I suppose I now have another project to work on!

I’ll also try and take some better photos later. My toddler had just woken up from her nap when I took these and was in a bad mood!

Material Notes

Fabric: screen printed denim (no idea of brand!)
Orange cotton solid (Kona?)
